About Google DeepMind

DeepMind was founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis (now CEO), Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman, and acquired by Google in 2014. In 2023 it merged with Google Brain — led by Jeff Dean — to become Google DeepMind, the company’s single AI research organization.

Impact

The lab is known for landmark research — AlphaGo’s defeat of a Go world champion and AlphaFold’s solution to protein structure prediction, which earned a Nobel Prize. It now develops the Gemini 2.5 Pro model family that powers Google’s AI products. Early Google Brain alumnus Andrew Ng co-founded the broader deep-learning movement that DeepMind extended; Fei-Fei Li’s ImageNet was a foundational dataset for the era.
